The story of Esther saving the Jewish people is an inspiring tale of courage and faith. This event is detailed in the Book of Esther in the Bible. She was a young Jewish woman, becomes a queen and uses her position to protect her people from a dangerous plot.
Esther Becomes Queen
Bible Verse: Esther 2:17
“Now the king was attracted to Esther more than to any of the other women, and she won his favor and approval more than any of the other virgins. So he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.”
Esther, an orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, was chosen by King Xerxes to be the new queen of Persia. She found favor in the king’s eyes, but she kept her Jewish identity a secret.
Haman’s Plot Against the Jews
Bible Verse: Esther 3:5-6
“When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged. Yet having learned who Mordecai’s people were, he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai. Instead, Haman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.”
Haman, a high official in the king’s court, hated Mordecai because Mordecai refused to bow to him. When Haman learned that Mordecai was Jewish, he planned to destroy all the Jews in the kingdom.
Esther’s Brave Plan
Bible Verse: Esther 4:16
“Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”
Mordecai asked Esther to speak to the king about Haman’s plot. At first, she was afraid because approaching the king without being summoned could mean death. But she bravely decided to risk her life to save her people. She asked the Jews to fast and pray for her.
Esther Reveals Haman’s Plot
Bible Verse: Esther 7:3-4
“Then Queen Esther answered, ‘If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. For I and my people have been sold to be destroyed, killed and annihilated.'”
During a banquet with the king and Haman, she revealed her Jewish identity and told the king about Haman’s plan to destroy the Jews. The king was shocked and angry.
The King’s Decree and the Jews’ Victory
Bible Verse: Esther 8:10-11
“Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the dispatches with the king’s signet ring, and sent them by mounted couriers, who rode fast horses especially bred for the king’s service. The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate any armed force of any nationality or province that might attack them and their women and children; and to plunder the property of their enemies.”
The king allowed Mordecai to write a new decree, giving the Jews the right to defend themselves. Haman was executed, and the Jewish people were saved from destruction.
